One of the things that I loved the most about The Disappearance of Emily H. was how easy it was to read and get into. I started the book and in a matter of minutes I was 5 chapters in. I think the writing style is very accessible to middle grade kids and that they will find it both easy to read and enjoyable.

Raine is a determined and likeable character. From the beginning, she is curious about what happened to Emily and is determined to find her. I loved how brave she was while trying to find Emily. However, I do think some of her choices were too risky. Still, I understand why she did what she did and respect her for it.

I really liked Raine's friendship with Shirlee. It was nice to see Raine make a friend since she mentions that she doesn't often have the chance with her mom wanting to move a lot. I was happy to see Raine be there for Shirlee when the "mean girls" picked on her.

The only part I wasn't too crazy about were the sparkles. In the beginning, it took me a minute to figure out what exactly a sparkle was. I know that the sparkles were an interesting way to find out information about people and to gather clues but I still didn't care for them. However, I think kids will find them more enjoyable than that I did.

I loved the mystery of this novel! While some plot points were a bit predictable, I still found the twists and turns interesting. I think fans of middle grade fiction will enjoy this novel.

  1. Great review, Ashley! I just sent the library's copy to the lady over youth services in our system. This sounds like something great to push on the kids. :-)

  2. If I were to choose, I would rather see the future so that I'll be ready for whatever happens.
