An Open Letter to Shonda Rhimes

***This is my open letter to Shonda Rhimes following last week's episode***

For 11 years, I have tuned in for one hour a week to watch Grey's Anatomy. I was 16 years old when I first started watching. I grew up watching Grey's Anatomy. I still remember the first episode I watched. It was the season one finale. After that episode I was hooked and found a way to watch the rest of the first season. I don't remember how I originally watched the first season but I do know that I bought it on DVD at some point (I also have most of the other seasons on DVD).  I say all of this because I want you to understand that this is a show I have invested a lot of my time and money in. It was my favorite TV show for years. I loved Grey's Anatomy but after last week's episode I'm giving it up.

Last week episode was the most sloppily, unnecessary episode of Grey's Anatomy that I have watched in 11 years. That episode was a betrayal to me, Derek, Meredith, Grey's Anatomy, and all loyal fans. It's not just that you killed off a major character. It's not even how you did it. (Though, those are important to note). It's that you killed off the central storyline of the show. Anyone that has been watching Grey's Anatomy since the beginning knows that Meredith and Derek's relationship is central to the story. Grey's Anatomy is about Meredith going from this dark place unable to commit to someone that wants a husband and a family. It's about her character evolving and her finally getting what she wanted. Then, when she gets you rip it in all away in the blink of a eye. After all that Meredith has lost; her mother, step-mother, sister, several friends, and her best friend moving across the globe, surely, she deserves this happily ever after. Instead, you chose to leave her with virtually nothing.

So, I say all of that to say this. I'm no longer watching Grey's Anatomy. I'm done. I have already deleted all episodes from my DVR and deleted the timer that was set to record new episodes. Sure, there is a small part of me that wants to know what going to happen next and it really angers me that I feel that way at all. However, I'm not going to be watching. You may not be able to see that I'm not watching, you may not even notice a difference in the ratings but I hope that you do. I hope that the others that state that they are no longer watching follow through on that. I hope that our voice is heard.

I feel like part of the reason that you did that was to simply prove that you could. You wanted to make a point that everyone is replaceable. I believe that the joke may prove to be on you. I hope that is the case at least.

I loved Grey's Anatomy. Heck, I still love Grey's Anatomy but I can't support you or the show any longer. Honestly, I'm not 100% sure that if I didn't give you another chance you wouldn't reward me by killing off Meredith Gray in the series finale. So instead of giving you another chance I'm going to rewatch the seasons I have on DVD (I don't want further support you in any way) and pretend that Meredith and Derek live next door to Mark and Lexie and that they all lived happily ever after.

  1. I definitely know how you feel. I've been watching Grey's since I was in high school as well, and I do think that this will be my last season watching the show. I just can't leave it without seeing how they attempt to recover from what they did to us, but I highly doubt that it's going to change my mind.

  2. Great information. Thanks for providing us such a useful information. Keep up the good work and continue providing us more quality information from time to time. Grey's Anatomy‬,‪Meredith Grey‬‬
