Can Evie convince her rival loves to work together? Their survival depends on it in this third book of #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole’s Arcana Chronicles, a nonstop action tale of rescue, redemption, and a revenge most wicked.
Evie was almost seduced by the life of comfort that Death offered her—until Jack was threatened by two of the most horrific Arcana, the Lovers. She will do anything to save him, even escape Death’s uncanny prison, full of beautiful objects, material comforts…and stolen glances from a former love.
Despite leaving a part of her heart behind with Death, Evie sets out into a perilous post-apocalyptic wasteland to meet up with her allies and launch an attack on the Lovers. Such formidable enemies require a battle plan, and the only way to kill them may mean Evie, Jack, and Death allying. Evie doesn’t know what will prove more impossible: surviving slavers, plague, Bagmen and other Arcana—or convincing Jack and Death to work together.
Two heroes returned
There’s a thin line between love and hate, and Evie just doesn’t know where she stands with either Jack or Death. Will this unlikely trio be able to defeat The Lovers without killing one another first...?
Dead of Winter was everything I was hoping for and more in the third installment of The Arcana Chronicles. There was action, romance, a thrilling plot, and surprising twists. One and did I forget to mention a love triangle that will rip your heart out? Jackson, Death. Death, Jackson.
I listened to most of the book on audio but I did read some of it too. I just had to know what happened and I typically only listen to audiobooks when I am driving or doing something that I can't read while doing. Emma Galvin returns to narrate and continues to do an excellent job. I enjoy the different accents she does for Evie, Jack and Death.
One of the things that I enjoyed the most about the plot is that there are a lot of scenes with Jack and Death together. I loved their back and forth but even more I loved seeing how their view of one another changed. It was very surprising but I felt that after reading it, it makes sense.
In Dead of Winter, we meet a couple new Arcana that I believe are definitely setting up for the next book. We also find out a lot more about the Arcana we already have been introduced to. Jules, Gabriel, Tess are more involved in this book and we finally get a glimpse at Tess's powers. Then, there are the Lovers that we find out too much about. Those two are seriously screwed up.
Evie has a tough decision in Dead of Winter. She has to choose between Jack and Death (Aric). It's clear that Evie loves them both but in very different ways. As Evie points out both guys have hurt her but she knows that she could be happy with either of them. A lot of the book focuses on Evie's choice between Jack and Aric and her inner struggle to figure out which man she is going to choose and which one she's going to break their heart.
Like Evie, I am a little in love with both Jack and Aric. In Poison Princess, I loved Jackson and hated Death. However, after Endless Knight I couldn't help but love Aric. There are very few authors that are able to take a character I hated and turned him into one I love but Kresley Cole did that with Death. (The only other time that happened was with Warner in Shatter Me). You can't help but feel for him as you find out what all he has endured throughout his long life. And as much as I loved Jackson, I have to say that I have officially switched sides and are on Team Death. I'm sorry, I just can't help it.
The second to last chapter completely gutted me. It wasn't what I was expected and it was something I was unprepared for. However, the real shocking, mind blowing twist comes in the final pages. The final pages change everything! I read the last two chapters twice and then listened to them on audio twice. I still can't wrap my mind around what happened. I really can't believe what happened and I think there has to be more to the story. Unfortunately, I guess I'll have to wait until the next book comes out to find out.
Just remember, prepare yourself for the ending! It is going to blow your mind!
