We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

I went into We Were Liars relatively blind. I didn't read reviews and I while I did read the description it was somewhat vague. I didn't know what to expect except for a shocking ending and really good book since everyone was raving about it.

My opinion on We Were Liars is conflicted. While I really did enjoy most of the novel, I was disappointed in the lack of shock I had at the end. I thought that it was going to be a truly, shocking ending but it wasn't. I found that I knew what was going to happen very early on. Yes, there were times were I thought that I couldn't be right but I'm not sure that it wasn't simply because I was expecting something more shocking. Still, by the time the big reveal happened I was certain of how things would end.

Another thing that kept me from truly loving this book was the fact that I didn't feel that intense emotion at the end. There was sadness, yes, but not the level that is needed for me to truly love a book. Not enough for me to feel that I was truly and completely invested in the characters.

All that being said, there were something that I liked about the book. I did enjoy the story in general and had I not have been expecting this shocking and riveting book I would have been pleased with the book. The story is entertaining and the writing itself is near flawless. Lockhart has this beautiful way of telling a story.

Also, the narrator was excellent. She showed Kadie's emotions very well. When Kadie was upset about something you could hear it in the narrator's voice. Not all narrator's do this and I was very happy that she did.

Overall, I liked We Were Liars. Yes, I was expecting more and yes, I wanted something a little more shocking but the fact is that We Were Liars is an excellently written story that many readers will love even if I did not.

Note: Actual rating is closer to a 3.5 but since I don't do half cows I'm rounding up!
