Movie Review: Mockingjay

Mockingjay was my most anticipated movie this year! I am a huge fan of the series and couldn't wait to go see it. It's a tradition of mine to see the movies opening night. I love the huge crowds and standing in line and just being with other passionate fans. This year I didn't think I would be able to go because typically I drive an hour to see a movie (welcome to small town America) but this year a local theater actually had Mockingjay playing opening night. I convinced my mom to go with me (which didn't take much convincing because she's a fan of the series too).  There's wasn't a line or anything but there were a good amount of people especially considering the town and the fact it was a Thursday night.

Mockingjay is a good movie. Definitely not my favorite in the series but still a good movie. I was a little disappointed in Mockingjay but I think it was more from having a high expectation. I really missed Peeta in this movie. His screen time is very limited and he's probably only in it for about 10 minutes. Of course, this is something I knew going in having read the books but I was shocked by how much I missed him. One thing that I was happy about that was changed from the book to the movie was how much Effie was in this movie. I don't even remember Effie being in Mockingjay (but it has been a while since I read the book so if she was in the book please let me know in the comments, I'm curious).

Haymitch continues to be a dynamic character that you can't help but love. His lines never fail to provide comic relief.  As I said, Effie was very much present in Mockingjay and I loved it! Effie is definitely one of my favorite characters. I loved how she is both different and the same in this movie. She's missing all of her material flair but she makes due with what she has.

In the books, I was always Team Peeta but when they cast Liam Hemsworth as Gale I must admit that I did consider changing sides. However, after watching the first two movies and especially Mockingjay where we see Gale more I find that the same things that made me like Peeta over Gale in the book make me like Peeta over Gale in the movie. At the end of the day, it wasn't Peeta's looks that made me like him over Gale but instead their personalities.

The action and tone of Mockingjay is very different from the first two movies. The arena is gone and the war has officially begun. Still, not a lot actually happens in Mockingjay. There's a lot of planning but not a lot of action. I think the second half will be much better and probably be the best in the series.

  1. I really missed Peeta, too!!! I felt the same way about the first half of the book, though. I just kept reading thinking, "where is Peeta? Can we find Peeta, please?"

  2. I agree! it felt kind of slow to me though. I'm sure that's because they split the book into two movies though.
