Made for You Blog Tour: Review and Giveaway

Made for You by Melissa Marr
Published by: HarperCollins
Publication date: September 16th 2014
Genres: Southern Gothic, Young Adult

Bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely books Melissa Marr’s first contemporary YA novel is a twisted southern gothic tale of obsession, romance, and murder. A killer is obsessed with Eva Tilling. Can she stop him, or will he claim her?

When Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital, she’s confused—who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why? But before she can consider the question, she finds that she’s awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people’s deaths when they touch her. While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old flame, reappears, and the two must traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva’s power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. But while Eva and Nate grow closer, the killer grows increasingly frantic in his attempt to get to Eva.

For the first time, New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr has applied her extraordinary talent to contemporary realism. Chilling twists, unrequited obsession, and high-stakes romance drive this Gothic, racy thriller—a story of small-town oppression and salvation. Melissa’s fans, and every YA reader, will find its wild ride enthralling.

About Melissa Marr

Hmm, I’m never good at the bio bit. I used to teach college & bartend, now I write novels. I love to meet new people, to hear their stories, to walk through new streets and see new vistas. I enjoy art in all its guises–graffiti, surrealist paintings, classic sculptures, tattoos, interesting buildings, Renoir, photography . . . Art & nature, they feed my soul & thus my muse.

Made for You is very different from other books I have read my Melissa Marr. Most of the books I have read are from the Wicked Lovely series but I did also read Carnival Souls. Made for You is wholly, uniquely, different from all of those.

I wasn't completely sure what to expect with this book. I had skimmed the description but I hadn't put much thought into what the book was about. Turns out it was mostly mystery novel but with added insight into the killer and also a supernatural element. I loved the mystery aspect and I found that the Judge's chapters were creepy but also extremely interesting. The Judge's mind was twisted in such a way it was fascinating to read. I do wish she would have given a little more insight into how he became the way he did. She does mention it a little but I felt it was more in passing than anything else.

Eva was one of the sterotypical small town, southern, rich girls, only she wasn't, not really. Eva is from a small town and she is undeniably rich and popular but I don't think she wanted it to define her and she definitely wasn't one of those mean rich girls. She was actually a very likeable character as was most of her friends. That being said I didn't like her boyfriend, Robert. He was a jerk and I completely agreed with Grace from the get-go that Eva needed to dump him. I loved Nate but was disappointed in the fact that it took him running into her at the hospital after she had just had a car accident to make him talk to her. I feel like he should have done it a long time ago.

Eva's parents are difficult for me to understand. In the beginning, Eva talks about how they are never at home and seem distant. However, once they arrive home they almost become the world's most perfect parents. I understand that after almost losing your daughter could change your attitude but the complete 180 they did makes it hard for me to believe that they were ever distant at all.

The pacing of Made for You is excellent. I was on the edge of my seat dying to know how things would end. I love that Marr gives you clues as to who the killer is and that you are slowly able to weed out the different suspects and figure out who the killer is become Eva and the rest of the gang.

Made for You is an unique, suspenseful story that fans of Melissa Marr are sure to love!

  1. I really enjoyed Wicked Lovely but haven't read that Carinval one (yet). This one sounds right up my alley, though! I love mysteries and psychological thrillers, and the suspense/pacing sounds excellent! I also like how character driven it seems overall! Great review, Ashley! :)
