Get Even
Don't Get Mad #1
Author: Gretchen McNeil
Release Date: September 16th 2014
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars in Gretchen McNeil’s witty and suspenseful novel about four disparate girls who join forces to take revenge on high school bullies and create dangerous enemies for themselves in the process.
Bree, Olivia, Kitty, and Margot have nothing in common—at least that’s what they’d like the students and administrators of their elite private school to think. The girls have different goals, different friends, and different lives, but they share one very big secret: They’re all members of Don’t Get Mad, a secret society that anonymously takes revenge on the school’s bullies, mean girls, and tyrannical teachers.
When their latest target ends up dead with a blood-soaked “DGM” card in his hands, the girls realize that they’re not as anonymous as they thought—and that someone now wants revenge on them. Soon the clues are piling up, the police are closing in . . . and everyone has something to lose.

Get Even is a great mix of mystery, love, revenge, and suspense. Four girls decide to take matters into their own hands when their school does nothing to punish bullies. I loved the premise of this. It was almost like the four girls were Robin Hood except instead of stealing and giving money to the poor, they gave the school bullies a taste of their own medicine.

Get Even is a story that really pulls you in. It constantly had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure who was doing what and what was going to happen next. Sometimes, I was able to see things coming while others I was completely taken by surprise. I've been really into the mystery and suspense YA books these days so Get Even was just what I had been looking for.

The book alternates between the four main characters. At times, this can be somewhat confusing. Sometimes I would forget who was narrating or forget what had happened the last time tht narrator had been reading. Still, it wasn't a big enough problem to take away from my enjoyment of the book.

I loved all of the different relationships. My favorite was John and Bree. I loved their friendship at the beginning and even though they started having problems later on in the book it's easy to what where the problem actually stems from. Margot and Logan was another interesting relationship. I am really cheering Margot on. I loved that throughout the book she gains confidence in herself.

For some reason I had been thinking that Get Even was a standalone. I didn't realize there was a sequel until I was about two pages until the end and I still didn't know who the killer was. Needless to say, Get Even leaves you hanging. There is no resolution.

I liked that all four of the main characters where very different. It kind of reminded me of John Tucker Must Die when he was dating three different girls from different groups. That's how it was for Margot, Bree, Olivia, and Kitty. Each one had their own reasons for becoming part of the club and it was interesting discovering each one's motive along the way.

Get Even is full of tons of action and suspense. I couldn't wait to get to the end of the book to find out who the killer was but I guess I'll be waiting until at least until book two comes out.
