That Awkward Thursday (24) Technology Withdrawals

That Awkward Thursday is a feature hosted by Wholly Books where it's not only okay but encouraged to share your awkward moments!

Okay, so before I get to this week's That Awkward Thursday post I would like to point out as I was looking to see what number this post should be I realized that several times I forgot to put in a number, once skipped a number and once I posted the same number twice. So while this post is titled That Awkward Thursday (24) I think it's safe to say that it could actually be anywhere from post 22-28. BUT for simpilicty's sake, we are going to say that this is post 24.

Now, that I have given you that meaninless, awkward tidbit let's move on!

You may have noticed last week that I didn't post anything. I was on vacation and fully intended to post while there. For the first four nights, we stayed at a cabin in the mountains. On the website, it said that wifi was included. However, upon arriving, I realized that was not the case. I checked the website just to make sure that I had read correctly and I had. I didn't make a big fuss about it because 1) the lady was super nice 2) I'm not one to complain to begin with 3) we got a really great deal on the cabin and 4) even if I had complained I'm pretty sure there wouldn't have been time to install it before we left.

I spent four days with no internet and spotty cell phone service. To make matters worse, my phone is possessed. No seriously, it's insane. It randomly starts typing gibberish, calls people, mutes and unmutes itself while I'm on the phone, clicks on random stories on facebook, opens the window for me to post a picture on instagram, takes screenshots of itself, I could go on and on and on and on. Apple, I swear once I get a new phone I will never leave you again!! The icing on the cake was the fact that I also managed to leave my kindle at home. (sigh)

I think it's safe to say that I took a vacation from technology and I didn't hate it. Sure, I missed social media but it was nice to spend time with my family. We got to do a lot of fun stuff and enjoy nature. We went white water rafting, visited this really awesome natural slide called Slide Rock, toured Biltmore Estate, went to the Billy Graham Library, and saw elk and a bear in the wild! The second half of our vacation our hotel did have wifi but I still didn't use it too much, probably because I was exhausted!

Now, you are probably sayin to yourself, "Ashley, where is the awkwardness in this post?" You mean besides my crazy, awkward, possessed phone? I hear ya, I hear ya. I'm getting to it. Pay close attention now....

Nowadays, we spend so much time caught up into technology. We are constantly on the internet, social media, our kindle/tablet/ect. We think that these are things that we can't live without. We almost have a panic attack when we have to go without them. I seriously spent an hour trying to figure out if we had internet in the cabin. I searched the cabin for a wireless router, kept rechecking the wireless networks available, everything I could think of.  I acted like a crazy person and for what? Because I couldn't update my facebook status, post on my blog, read a book? Okay, maybe that last one is reason for a panic attack.

I'm not saying we should all give up technology. I LOVE technology. All I'm saying is that going a week without it isn't cause for a panic attack. So if you find yourself without technology: take a deep breath and relax. Everything's going to be alright.
