Movie Review: The Giver

Last night, childhood me was doing backflips. Not only did I get to see a trailer for a movie based on a book I loved as a young child (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day), but also, was able to see one of my favorite books as a pre-teen.

Before The Hunger Games, Delirium, and Divergent, there was The Giver. Before Katniss volunteered as tribute and sparked a revolution, Jonas was the revolution. Before Tris chose Dauntless, Jonas saw a colorless world with specks of color. Before Lena realized that love wasn't a disease, Jonas risked it all because he understood that love and warmth are worth fighting for.

I am always a bit apprehensive when it comes to watching a movie adaptation for a book I loved, that way I will be pleasantly surprised if I like it. With The Giver, I had nothing to worry about. I feel that The Giver was excellently done. I loved how they did the memories. The good ones were this montage of all the good things we have in the world that we so often take for granted. As some of them played I got chills. The bad ones were tended to be a little longer and more in depth. While they weren't even close to the worse things we have seen in this world, they were powerful. It wasn't so much what they showed, but rather, how Jonas reacted to them. He couldn't understand why someone would do that. I felt that Jonas's reaction was a way of showing how desensitized we have become.

As far as the performances went, I LOVED Jeff Bridges. He was excellent. Meryl Streep is as always wonderful. Brenton Thwaites did a great job as Jonas. As a whole, I thought the casting was done very well.

The way they showed the movie in partial black and white and then slowly introduced color was genius. I think it provided a great contrast for what life is like without emotions and what it is with them. People want world peace but the reality of it is as long as we have the ability to love, we will also have the ability to hate.

I am so glad that they finally made The Giver into a movie. I still have two books in the series to read and seeing the movie has definitely made me want to pick them up.
