That Awkward Thursday (22) Mid-Series Cover Changes

That Awkward Thursday is a feature hosted by Wholly Books where it's not only okay but encouraged to share your awkward moments! 

Last week, I talked about posting the same thing twice so I think it's kind of fitting that this week I am revisiting an old topic. I talked before about Covers Being Redesigned and how annoying it is to my matching cover OCDness. Well, unfortunately, this has happened again. Sighhhhhh.

Recently, I saw the cover reveal for the third book in Kresley Cole's YA series, Dead of Winter, and I was completely shocked by it. I was expecting another beautiful cover with Evie and Death or Jack or both but instead it's pretty plain IMO. It's a snowy landscape with the title written very large and some kind of Arcana symbol.  Here take a look...

I loved, LOVED the covers to the first two books which made this cover change so much more disappointed. I just don't understand why they felt a change was needed. Covers with sexy guys on the front or plain scenic background. Doesn't really seem like a choice to me! To me, it seems like they may have tried to make them look a little more like her adult book covers rather than YA covers. Maybe they wanted to appeal more to adult readers? Of course, I am technically (as much as I hate to admit it) an adult reader.

I also learned that they redid the covers for the first two as well.

What do you think? Am I justified or do you prefer the new covers? Have you ever been unhappy with a cover redesign? Do you like all of your books to match?


  1. I haven't read this series but the blond guy on the second cover, to me anyway, is super creepy looking! So if I was to read them, I'd probably get the redesigns. Actually I'd probably get them anyway because like you I want my covers to match haha.

  2. I saw this! Ugh, NO, I am not happy with the change for the same reasons you mentioned.
    It bothers me a lot when my books don't match, it pressures me into buying matching ones.

    They've been doing this to a lot books recently. I wouldn't mind much if the covers were gorgeous (such as the Anna, Lola, & Isla books). Another I'm not happy with is the cover to Opposition (Lux 5).

  3. This was an odd cover change. I think they wanted to appeal to Cole's adult fans. I actually like the new covers but I don't think either of them fit the tone of the book. The one cover change i didn't like was for Send Me A Sign by Tiffany Schmidt. It's not a series change but the book looks so different
