Movie Review: Divergent

**This review may contain spoilers for those that have not read Divergent.**

I was on vacation last weekend so I just got around to seeing Divergent this weekend. I am so happy to see another YA movie adaptation doing well after Vampire Academy and City of Bones struggled. While Divergent isn't my favorite book series, I still wanted it to do well and wanted to support it.

I got my go to movie watcher, my mom (since my husband is pretty anti-movie) to go with me. We went as part of my early birthday celebration. I'm turning 26 on Saturday! :(

Even though I didn't love the series as a whole I did enjoy the first book the best and the previews looked great so I was very hopeful. I didn't love the movie but I did think it was very good. I really liked Theo James as Four and Shailene Woodley as Tris. I wasn't sure about either of them when they were first casted but after seeing the movie I know the casting director made the right decision.

As with any book to movie adaptation there were things that were left out. One of the most notable ones in my opinion was the exclusion of Will and Christina's relationship. In the book they are very much and obviously together but in the movie they come off as more just friends. I don't remember seeing any signs that there was more to their relationship than that but I may have missed something. If I didn't miss something, I think part of the plot for the next movie will be changed from the book since the tension between Tris and Christina revolves around Tris killing Christina's boyfriend.

Overall, I enjoyed Divergent. It's not my favorite YA book to movie adaptation but it was definitely entertaining. Divergent is action packed and I think fans of the series will be pleased with the adaptation.

  1. Neil Burger’s DIVERGENT is a good watch despite its occasionally dead pace and the shortage of jaw-dropping action sequences but not for regular hardcore science-fiction lovers.
