Tavia Michaels is the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed her parents. When she starts to see strange visions of a boy she’s never spoken with in real life, she begins to suspect that there’s much about her past that she isn’t being told.
Tavia immediately searches for answers, desperate to determine why she feels so drawn to a boy she hardly knows. But when Tavia discovers that the aunt and uncle who took her in after her parents’ death may have actually been responsible for the plane crash that killed them–and that she may have been the true intended victim–she flees for the safety of Camden, Maine, where the boy she sees in her visions instructs her to go.
Now, Tavia is on the run with no one to trust. No one, that is, except for her best friend and longtime crush, Benson.
Tavia feels torn between the boy who mysteriously comes to her at night and the boy who has been by her side every step of the way. But what Tavia doesn’t know is that the world is literally falling apart and that to save it she will have to unite with the boy in her visions. Only problem? To do so would mean rejecting Benson’s love. And that’s the one thing Tavia Michaels swore she’d never do.
EARTHBOUND by Aprilynne Pike is fresh, new paranormal romance. It's a book that will keep you up at night trying to finish. There were some qualities of the story that were reminiscent (IMO) to the Wings series which I enjoyed. However, the story itself is different and unique entirely on it's own.
I really loved all of the characters in this book. I felt for Tavia because every time she thought she had someone in her life that really cared about her she lost them in some way. Pike does an excellent job creating characters that are nothing like they appear. Some characters you will trust immediately only to find out that they aren't trustworthy. While others, you thought weren't trustworthy actually are. It's a very tangled web of lies and deception but once it's untangled your mind will be completely blown.
I loved that Benson was this really cute nerdy guy. I totally have him pictured like the guy playing Simon in TMI. (Also, please note that I am never one to pay too attention to descriptions in books. I even wrote a whole post about it so please forgive me if the description of him is nothing like Simon.) But seriously, that's how I have him pictured. Plus, the guy works in a library so he totally has that whole thing going for him.
I was also (like Tavia) drawn to Quinn. With him, I couldn't help but be reminded of Ethan from Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series. And their descriptions are actually almost identical (minus Quinn being a 400 year old master vampire). Blond hair, green, hair pulled back at the nape of the neck, totally Ethan. That probably is why I was drawn to him and of course later we find out why Tavia was drawn to him.
The world Pike creates in EARTHBOUND is different from most YA stories. It's not the typical paranormal creatures (faeries, vampires, werewolves, ect.). And while I love faeries and vampires, I found EARTHBOUND to be refreshing. It's always nice to take a break from old favorites in search of something new. For me, EARTHBOUND was that something new.
While I didn't love this book like I did the final book in the Wings series, DESTINED, I found myself really enjoying EARTHBOUND. I feel that it's a great start for a new series and I know Aprilynne Pike has much more in store for us in the upcoming sequels!
