That Awkward Thursday (16) I'm a Book Cougar!!

That Awkward Thursday is a feature hosted by Wholly Books where it's not only okay but encouraged to share your awkward moments!

That awkward moment you realize a character is too young for you.

As a twenty-something year old that has a great love for YA books, it is inevitable that I will fall for guys that are way too young for me. I'll be sitting there picturing these characters in all their sexiness and then suddenly I remember, HE'S 16! Whoa! Talk about robbing the cradle!

The good news is that since it's a book and they are in fact fictional characters I'm not doing anything illegal and for the most part it is socially acceptable. Better news? Since they are fictional I can change a couple of minor details like say, age. Bump them up a couple of years and wa-la I got myself a new book boyfriend (that isn't way too young for me).

In all seriousness though, it is a little awkward when I think about the fact that I am actually crushing on high school boys. I mean most of the time I don't consider myself an adult but the fact of the matter is I am. I'm not a high schooler or even a college student. I'm an adult with a grown up job and a kid!

Despite the awkwardness, I'm still not willing to give up my YA books so this is an awkwardness I'm just going to have to get use to.

What about you? Do you ever crush on guys in books that are not age appropriate?

  1. I don't think it helps the situation when they seem more mature in books than they ever seemed when I was 16 haha.

  2. omg SO TRUE! I was at a signing last saturday and was talking to some girls and we were discussing on how lots of YA boys are wayyyy younger than us (I'm 22!) and it is a bit awkward to crush on them. I told them what I do is just say "you are 20 or you are 22; I am not a pedophile!". Haha. I love this post! totally applies to all older girls who read YA :D

  3. Love this post. I am older than you and I am such a book cougar to. I love that we can swoon and gush after all these young hotties without going to jail or being labeled crazy LOL! So much fun. If you haven't read the Keatyn Chronicles by Jillian Dodd, they are great. There is a Keatyn Chronicles Boy Discussion Group on Facebook and we have the most fun there doing just that :).

  4. Oh my goodness, I love this! The guys from YA books are generally around the same age as me, right now - but I've always wondered what will happen when I'm older and still reading the same type of books. (because I am NOT giving up my YA books.) And then - another thing is. The guys in books are always a million times more mature and attractive then the guys who are actually their age in real life. It's like when you watch a teen show, and the guy is super attractive and then you actually look at one high school students look like.

SORRY. For my mini rant. But great post!! :)
