From the author of the “real page-turner” (Seventeen) Such a Rush comes an unforgettable new drama that follows friends-turned-lovers as they navigate the passions, heartbreaks, and intrigue of country music fame.
Bailey wasn’t always a wild child and the black sheep of her family. She used to play fiddle and tour the music circuit with her sister, Julie, who sang and played guitar. That ended when country music execs swooped in and signed Julie to a solo deal. Never mind that Julie and Bailey were a duet, or that Bailey was their songwriter. The music scouts wanted only Julie, and their parents were content to sit by and let her fulfill her dreams while Bailey’s were hushed away.
Bailey has tried to numb the pain and disappointment over what could have been. And as Julie’s debut album is set to hit the charts, her parents get fed up with Bailey’s antics and ship her off to granddad’s house in Nashville. Playing fiddle in washed-up tribute groups at the mall, Bailey meets Sam, a handsome and oh-so-persuasive guitarist with his own band. He knows Bailey’s fiddle playing is just the thing his band needs to break into the industry. But this life has broken Bailey’s heart once before. She isn’t sure she’s ready to let Sam take her there again…

DIRTY LITTLE SECRET is a book that will catch your attention from page one. At the surface it's a fun and entertaining book about music and first love but when you dig deeper it's so much more than that. DIRTY LITTLE SECRET deals with dsyfunctional family issues, self-doubt, insecurities, and learning that following your dreams is worth the risk.
I really loved Bailey and felt so sorry for her. Her family has seemingly left her behind and she has been forced to give up her one true love or pay the penalty for continuing to pursue it. And to Bailey the penalty (no Vanderbilt) seems pretty steep. Enter Sam. In one day, Sam is able to give Bailey exactly what she wants; a second chance for her dream. But is Bailey really ready to risk losing the only future she has been allowed to picture for the last year for the one everyone else has given up on for her?
Bailey is such a fun character. She is so passionate about music and wants nothing more than to pursue her music career. I loved hearing her talk about how she "tried" to rebel but just wasn't good at it. She struggles with the fact that her family left her behind and that her sister was chosen over her for a record deal.
Sam is a guy that I had a love/hate relationship with. There were times where he was so swoony I could hardly stand it and others where he was such a jerk I wanted to slap him. I never could quite figure him out. Was he using Bailey or did he actually care about her? I think I got whiplash from trying to figure that one out!
I will admit I'm not a huge music fan. I mean I like music but I don't love it. However, I did like the music aspect of DIRTY LITTLE SECRET. I loved the Nashville setting and learning all about how big country music is there. I mean I knew country music was HUGE in Nashville but the thing about tribute bands playing in the malls? I had NO IDEA! I seriously want to head to a mall in Nashville just to check it out!
Time for another confession, I hated Bailey's family! I mean what kind of family just completely drops one daughter just so the other can pursue her dream (nevermind the other daughter has the same dream!)? I just found the family cold. Even the granddad seems to think it's okay for Bailey to be forced to go without her passion. At the end, I felt Julie redeemed herself. As for the rest of them, still jerks in my opinion!
I spent most of DIRTY LITTLE SECRET trying to decide if this was my favorite Jennifer Echols's book I've read. And while I did thoroughly enjoy it, I think SUCH A RUSH is still my favorite even if it just because I have a thing for flying and pilots! :) Still, DIRTY LITTLE SECRET is an excellent book that fans of Jennifer Echols will love and is sure to help make some new ones!
FAVORITE QUOTE: “Deana Carter sings about it. Lady Antebellum sings about it. Eric Church. Gosh, not just country artists. Katy Perry. Everybody has a song about it because everybody's been through it. You find that person at eighteen and you lose yourself. And the tragedy is, it's the person who's completely opposed to everything you've ever wanted. You bond with that person, and that person breaks your heart. I'm that tragedy for you, and you're mine.” - Jennifer Echols, Dirty Little Secret
