That Awkward Thursday (12) Misleading Covers

That Awkward Thursday is a feature hosted by Wholly Books where it's not only okay but encouraged to share your awkward moments!

That awkward moment a cover has nothing to do with the book...

We've all experienced this, you love a cover. It's beautiful. You read the book and adore it. It's fast paced, full of excitement and has an epic love story. THEN...you close the book and look at the cover. It's still beautiful BUT... it has absolutely nothing to do with the book.

Example 1: Fallen by Lauren Kate

There is a trend in YA of girls wearing formal dresses on covers. I'll admit I love these covers. They are gorgeous but at the same time I wonder, why? In no part of the book does the female protag ever wear a formal gown. So why feature her on the cover in one?

I love this cover. It's one of the reason I bought this book in the first place. The cover was eye catching and I loved it. However, I don't believe the girl ever wears a black formal gown through the woods. It's been a while since I read this book (several years) so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Example 2:  The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse

The Forsaken has one of if not the most unique and original covers in my opinion. It really is cool. However, I don't exactly get what the cover has to do with the book. Yeah, they give her a brain test so maybe that's what the open part of the top of her head is about. Or maybe the cover artist just went a little too deep for me!

Example 3: The Dark Devine by Bree Despain

This cover stands out to me because of the contrast between the black background and the pale white skin. Grace (the MC) may be pale (it's been a while since I read it and I can't remember if that is every mentioned) but still even if she is what's with the deal with the pale legs being wrapped in purple sheer? The other two covers did something similar and I don't understand how that has anything to do with the book.

So is this just a me thing or do you think covers sometimes have nothing to do with the book? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Also, if you did a post leave a link and I'll check it out!

  1. Yes I put 'Fallen' too. I bought it for exactly the same reasons you did and I also don't remember her wearing a dress. I thought about putting 'The Dark Divine' too but then I couldn't really remember enough about it to be confident enough to put it. I never look in to deeper meaning of covers. I will assume that the cover is being literal if there is a specific image on the front.

  2. Oh, I actually LOVED the cover for The Forsaken! I DID read up on the thoughts behind it before the book was published so it kind of all made sense to me and was explained beforehand :)
I totally agree -- The girls in dresses trend.... Okay, the dresses are gorgeous, I'll give them that, but I hate when it has NOTHING to do with the book. Like Sweet Evil. I loved that book but Anna was actually kind of anti-dresses in the book so I thought it was silly that she was featured on the cover in a prom gown! Totally never happened. Oh well!
I'd actually say the worst misleading covers are the ones who made me think the story was one thing and then it wasn't. Like the cover for Uses for Boys was so pretty but the story was so raw or the cover for Level 2 making me think it was super dystopian when it was a mix of several genres and actually got pretty religious. Those tend to upset me the most!

  3. I hadn't given it a lot of thought, but I would find it frustrating! I made sure my cover related to the book, even putting in a mention of the dress my heroine is wearing on the cover (though you can barely see it). I love making sure my covers are relevant to the story. Will be keeping an eye on the covers for the books I read from now on!

  4. I hate misleading covers!!! That new trend of girls wearing prom dresses on dystopians is pretty weird, imo. Pretty&weird- Lol. I haven't read The Forsaken, but I agree, the cover is cool, too bad that it doesn't seem to have much to do with story :(
    Great post!! :)
