That Awkward Thursday (6) What's with the cover?

That Awkward Thursday is a feature hosted by Wholly Books where it's not only okay but encouraged to share your awkward moments!

That awkward moment you love the book, but hate the cover...

I'll admit it, I do judge a book by it's cover. If your book has an amazing cover I am at least 10 times more likely to buy your book. Honestly, now that I'm looking for books I loved but hated the cover, I am having a hard time finding any because apparently I almost always buy books that have covers that I love. I think a better topic would have been that awkward moment you love the cover, but hate the book.... Oh well, another topic for later on! :)

After doing some searching there are a couple of books that I loved that I hated the cover. Oddly enough they are both mermaid books! So here's the books that have covers I'm not crazy about...

Florence by Ciye Cho is an amazing book with remarkable worldbuilding and unforgetable characters. However, this cover (in my lowly opinion) doesn't do the book justice. It's just to cartoonish for my taste.

Of Poseidon by Anna Banks is funny and so entertaining! The cover on the other hand is just blah! I do like the pink writing but that's about it.

Both of the above recieved 5 cow/star reviews from me. I absolutely LOVED them. However, I don't love their covers. I love having pretty covers on my shelves and neither of these are considered pretty...BUT I loved them both so they have to be on my shelf.

This post really made me understand just how superficial I am (which that in itself is awkward). Books, as with people, it's supposed to be about what's on the inside that matters, not the outside. The good news is I must not be too superficial since I did buy the books! :)

So what do you think? Does a cover make a difference to you? Do you have any books that you loved but hated the cover?

  1. I do think covers are important, I mean on amazon that can sometimes be the only reason people click your book. Same goes for bookstores. I have a few books that I wasn't fond of their cover, but the book inside was amazing.

    1. Covers are so important! You are exactly right about the reason you click on a book on amazon! Covers are the first impression and you know what they say about those!!

  2. Florence kinda looks like a MG or children's book. I probably wouldn't pick it up without someone recommending it to me. I don't mind the Of Poseidon cover. It's not my favorite, but I like the colors and the water element. Haven't read either of these though!

  3. I don't really like those covers either, but Of Poseidon was an amazing book! I like the Of Triton cover a lot better.

  4. I agree Florence does look cartoonish and MG. I don't think I would have normally bought it or read it if I didn't read such great reviews about it. I haven't read Of Poseidon yet, but plan to.
