That Awkward Thursday (3) When your friends just don't get you

That Awkward Thursday is a feature hosted by Wholly Books where it's not only okay but encouraged to share your awkward moments!

That awkward moment you realize your online friends "get you" better than your real friends...

Blogging is all about community. It’s about a group of people sharing a common interest and interacting with each other. Like I said it’s all about community.

Honestly, I never thought I would be able to find a group of people that really got me. The thing is most of my friends don’t read. I mean, sure, there are a couple that read here and there but they aren’t readers. They just don’t get what it is about books that I love so much! They aren’t passionate about books like I am. But you my online friend totally are! YOU get ME! And I love you for it.

However, it’s still a little awkward whenever I want to talk to my friends or co-workers about books. See as book lovers, we love to discuss books. We love our books and want others to love them too. But sometimes, no matter how hard we try our friends just don’t understand what the excitement is all about. They don’t understand how we can love these fictional characters. They don’t understand how these stories that aren’t true can change our lives. So whenever I mention it to them I get these awkward looks and I can see them judging me.

Still, despite the awkward looks, I sometimes continue because I read a book so amazing that I just can’t keep it in. So I tell them and they pretend to listen but I know they’re not and then whenever an opportunity presents itself to change the subject they jump on it.

Seriously, this is how my real friends look when I talk about books....

In contrast, here's how my online friends react whenever I mention books...

See the difference? Of course you do! Now, which one is better? Yeah, pretty much no comparison! You my dear online friend are infinitely better when it comes to getting me and my book addiction and for that I am so, so grateful!

  1. I totally get this! My friends are pretty much the same, with the exception of the bloggers that I know in real life too.

I just can't talk books with my normal friends. They don't understand. I even have one friend who really enjoyed Delirium, and I was so excited when I found out, but then she didn't have that same enthusiasm as bookish people do. It was...disappointing really.

Oh well. I'm happy just fangirling with my online friends!

  2. LOL! That is SO like me friends too :D They just don't see the reasons for my love of books either. They don't even see the reasons for reading for fun. My online friends on the other side, totally get me :) Though sometimes a book is so good my real friends do ask me to borrow it. *awesome meme and gifs Ashley!!*

  3. This is so true! I sometimes feel like I've become closer to my online blogging friends than my friends in real life! It's funny how us bloggers seem to all say our online friends get us better than our IRL friends - I think there's a lot we all hold in around people that we're able to let out with no judgement online!

  4. Love the Hermione gif. Or I get the friends that don't understand why I read YA lol. I just don't talk about it with them anymore. Glad we all have each other

  5. I have a some friends and family that read but I wouldn't say that they 'get' me. I read WAY more and am much more enthusiastic. I do think my blogger friends understand that excitement much more. At least I do have friends and family that read though! And the bloggers and authors here in the Portland Oregon area are pretty tight knit so we have get togethers and stuff and that helps as well.

  7. Yeah, you're pretty much the only person I know that LOVES books so much! I read more than any other friends/family that I have, but even if, it's not nearly as much as you. Even if I do love a book a lot, I don't have the enthusiasm as you do. Happy Birthday!
