Goodreads Description:

Ava’s life went from bad to worse the night Chance became a vampire.

He won’t have anything to do with her. Ava understands why—because he blames her—but it doesn’t mean she likes it.

And it doesn’t help that she’s starting to feel something for Erik, the boy who once wanted her dead. Especially when Chance decides that he does still love her, and wants her to be with him for eternity.

Now she has a choice: Humanity…or forever as a vampire with Chance.

But Ava wants nothing more than to be human again. At least, she thought that was all she wanted.

Thankfully her best friend Kayla has a plan to distract Ava from her boy troubles, and they go in search of Kayla’s missing dad. A great idea, but one that brings Sebastian back into Ava’s life. Along with another, more sinister former member of his coven.

Sebastian and Zyris face off against Ava and her friends, resulting in Ava making yet another choice that changes the course of everyone’s lives, and leaves her wondering if being human again is really worth losing everything.

BLOOD AWAKENING is a rare find, being that it is a second book in a series that is actually better than the first. BLOOD AWAKENING somehow manages to avoid the second in a series slump unlike so many books these days. So, how was it done?

Well, for starters, you can definitely see an improvement in Manning’s writing. Gone are the awkward phrasings that were sometime found in BLOOD BORN. It’s not the first book was written badly, it’s simply that as with anything the more you do something the better you’ll be. It’s the ole’ practice makes perfect concept and Jamie is definitely proving it to be true.

Second, Erik! Oh my gosh! While I loved Chance in the first book I have to say that my allegiances definitely swapped to Team Erik. He was so hot in this book! His personality reminded me of Adrian from Vampire Academy (one of my favorite characters of all time) so I couldn’t help but fall for him. He had a playful attitude and confidence that leaned toward arrogance.

I also felt that the plot moved more quickly. There was constantly something happening. Ava finally begins learning about her past and starts thinking more about her future. The love triangle of Chance/Ava/Erik is complicated by Chance’s new state of being (and the fact that he has turned into a jerk). Ava’s choice is no longer just between Erik and Chance but also between whether she wants to become a vampire or continue her quest to become human again. I really liked that and thought that aspect added something to the story.

Ava and Kayla’s friendship felt more real and genuine in this book. There was an easiness to their relationship that is critical to all great friendships. They knew each other and knew exactly what to say and do to help one another.

BLOOD AWAKENING is a well written novel full of interesting characters and an action-packed plot that fans of the first book will absolutely devour! The third in the series can’t come out soon enough!
