That Awkward Thursday (2) Embarrassing Covers

That Awkward Thursday is a feature hosted by Wholly Books where it's not only okay but encouraged to share your awkward moments!

As a (almost) 25 year old, I realize that by reading YA books in public places I am going to get that look. I am going to automatically be judged by the fact that I am reading a vampire/werewolf/faery/insert other paranormal creature here. This is something that I have grown accustomed to and most of the times I don’t really care. However, every now and again I come across a cover that I am a little embarrassed to be seen with. It’s not that the cover is bad necessarily. It’s just that the cover looks very kidish. Case in point: Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

I’ll never forget a couple of years ago I was working at a newspaper. Every day during lunch, I went out back to a picnic table with some trees and sat and read. It was amazing because it was nice and cool and so relaxing. Seriously, it was the best lunches ever! Anyway, one day as I was walking back to my office and co-worker saw me and stopped me. We started talking and then she noticed the book. Our conversation went something like this…

Her: What are you reading?

Me: Um..just a book…it’s uh about Greek Mythology. *tries to hid book cover*

Her: Oh, that sounds interesting. What’s it called? *pulls my arm up so she can see the book cover*

Me: Uh, Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Her: I’ve heard of those! My grandson loves them! He’s 10.

Me: *blushes* Yeah, they are pretty good.

So, um, yeah, being told by your co-worker that you are reading the same book as their 10 year old grandson is just a wee bit embarrassing. Don’t get me wrong it’s not that I’m ashamed that I’ve read them or anything, it’s just I don’t like how people act like I’m an idiot because I read MG and YA books. I know they are good but most of these people have never read a MG or YA book so they have no idea that they are. THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE MISSING!!

Okay, so let’s take a look at this cover…

It is very obviously children books and almost 25 years are not their intended audience.

Have you ever been embarrassed to read a book in public? If so, what book? Why?

  1. haha that is so true! I looked at this topic from another stand point but yours is totally valid. Especially cartoonish covers.. Honestly I don't understand why people think it is a waste, intellectually, if let's say a 20 something year old reads a book that 10 year olds are able to read. SO WHAT? I seem to be enjoying it and that is what it comes down to it. We read for leisure, enjoinment. But yea, very awkward moment huh?

  2. i was embarrassed when I bought Anna and the French Kiss and 50 Shades lol I hate when people judge me when I read YA (I'm almost 24). But at least my family understands. My mom, aunt, and adult cousins all read it with me lol

    1. All I can say is that Anna and the French Kiss is definitely worth it!

Also, glad your family reads YA! It must be so fun to share different books you loved and have people to discuss them with!

  3. Aww, I used to read under a tree on my lunch break too! It was so nice to be able to do that. I was reading The Lord of the Rings back them (I work at home now). I bring a book to my son's swimming class and I never really think of what I'm reading until I'm there sitting only a few feet away from other parents for an hour. I remember I was embarrassed once but I can't remember the book... It was last spring. I was trying to hide the cover a bit. I'd glance around at other reading moms and it would be all adultish novels so I'd be embarrassed. Lately I've been bringing my nook to read galleys. The other day I didn't think and I was reading a review book that was a contemp romance, which I normally don't read. Of course I didn't get to the sex scenes until I was there! I felt so stupid and like everyone was staring at me! lol I had to skim to hurry up and move on.

    1. Reading outside under a tree is so nice and peaceful! I highly recommend it to everyone lol! And reading a sex scene in public is definitely awkward!

  4. My professor randomly asked our class if anyone actually likes reading. I raised my hand just not even thinking... and then he's like "Ok Michelle, what are you reading right now?" And I'm like... Do I really want to say that I'm reading My Fair Godmother by Janette Rallison? I mean it's a good book, but I was embarrassed... so I just said "You've probably never heard of it, basically it's not 50 Shades of Grey". And even though I don't have any plans to ever read that book, it's one I definitely wouldn't want to trot around in public bc everyone assumes you are a sex-fiend or something.

    1. Oh wow! That is definitely putting you on the spot! I like your answer though. I don't think I could have came up with something that fast! This situation is actually like a topic I am doing later. It's that awkward moment someone asks you what you like to read and you have to reply Young Adult Paranormal Romance. I can't remember what week it is though!

  5. I also face this problem when people ask if i read and say "yea!" they go like "have you read this? or that?" and they are all posh sleep inducing, boring as hell titles... then i got like.. "yea i only read YA" and they get offended like.. how can you be in your 20s and read YOUNG adult novels.. all I say in my head is "you are missing outttttt"

    haha
