No memories. A foreign world. One epic adventure.

Dark Genesis is a new YA paranormal fantasy from the creator of the Hunters of the Dark series.  You can get your copy of Dark Genesis now for FREE by filling out the Rafflecopter below.  Everyone who enters also has a chance to win a $40 gift card to Amazon or Barnes & Noble – it’s your choice!! This is an international contest and everyone who enters can choose their e-format of choice to receive their copy of Dark Genesis for free from Smashwords! And did I mention the $40 gift card?!

Here's the synopsis:
"Alyssa opened her eyes to darkness. And in the first flash of light provided by a gathering storm, she could make out a ring of bodies surrounding her.

With no memory of who she is, Alyssa stumbles into a dark world populated by witches. The witches are powerful, and demonstrate frightening powers, but even more terrifying are the monsters who rule over the land. Vampires, werewolves and other awful creatures of the night have taken over, forcing the witches behind stone walls, afraid to venture outdoors. But Alyssa finds that as she kills certain monsters, memories return to her, memories of a life on Earth, and the boy she left behind.

The quest to collect her memories and piece together the puzzle of what has happened to her is a daunting one, with betrayals and sacrifices every step of the way. But Alyssa is determined to fight for a world that is not her own, destroying powerful monsters along the way, so that she can return home to the boy she is coming to love through the memories she recollects."

The Interview

First off, I did some digging, not a ton because I’ve been knocking on death’s door, but I did check out your Facebook and blog and found next to nothing about YOU. Give us a little background about you. (And please don’t give us the dull, publicist approved version…we want all the juicy details! ;)

I grew up in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, where I had a pretty rough upbringing and got bullied quite a bit in school.  I was overweight, with braces and bad skin in junior high school, and I dreaded going to school every day.  But it was during this time that I discovered YA books, and they helped me escape from this environment that I hated, so there's a bright spot in there.  By the time I moved to central Minnesota, I had shed the excess weight, had my braces taken off, and my skin had cleared, so I was able to start fresh in a new high school where nobody knew me.  And while I wasn't quite the outcast that I had been in junior high school, I still wasn't the most popular guy.  And when I came out in my senior year, I was back to being bullied.  So, needless to say, I was happy to have school behind me when I graduated.  I took a year break before I went to a community college in Brooklyn Park, to do my generals, and found that college was a completely different beast.  I made friends easily, and the petty things that people cared about in high school were no longer there.  People were thinking about their futures, and were more accepting of diversity.  I founded the Gay/Straight Alliance group at the community college, and served on student senate, before I moved on to Saint Cloud State University and eventually earned a B.A. in English and creative writing.  I developed an appreciation for the classics while I attended college, and still read classics to this day, although YA has followed me my whole life, and holds a special place in my heart.  I hope that was juicy enough!

Yes, it was! Thank you for opening up to us! :)

Now, that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about your book, Dark Genesis. Tell us something interesting about Dark Genesis that we should know before reading it that we won’t get from the description.

I really tried to come up with unique twists on monsters in this book.  There are traditional vampires and demons, but you'll also see really neat versions of the monsters people have grown up with, and I've tried to enrich the mythology for creatures like werewolves.  But it's really the witches that are the focus here.  Every monster on this world began as a witch - a person with magic running through their veins - and it's the result of greed or fear that many of them became something else.

What can we expect from you next? Are you working on something now?

I write a series of YA paranormal fantasy books called "Hunters of the Dark," and I'm currently working on the fifth installment of that saga, which will see the monster hunters journey to Egypt and learn the origin of shape-shifters.

Is there a moment that you can pinpoint and say, “that’s why I decided I wanted to be a writer?” If so, when was that moment? What happened?

I read hundreds of teen books growing up.  I was very passionate about them, and oftentimes I would look at the cover and read the description, and come up with an idea of what the story would be like.  Sometimes my ideas were better than the actual stories I read, so I decided to write my own.

If being a writer wasn’t an option, what would your dream job be?

I also grew up reading tons of comics books, which you can definitely pick up on in my writing - my "Hunters of the Dark" books are often compared to "X-Men."  If I wasn't a writer, I would probably want to run a comic book store, as nerdy as that sounds.  I just think I would enjoy merchandising and ordering for a market like that.

Avid readers’ favorite books seem to change week to week based on what they’ve read recently or what kind of mood they are in (at least that’s how I am) What’s your favorite book right now?

My favorite book right now is Veronia Rossi's "Under the Never Sky."  Even more than "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent," I think this book really transports you to an imaginative dystopian world, with three-dimension characters that you just come to love and understand.

I believe that all good writers have something they want readers to take away from their books. What do you want readers to take away from yours?

That not everything is black and white.  There's a lot of gray in the world, leaving things open to interpretation, and the choices that you make, for better or worse, make up who you are as a person.  You'll see in all of my books that the choices that characters make hold consequences, and that's life.  There are many paths people can take, and the answer is not always clear.  People get hurt, people make mistakes, and people change.
Now, on to the this or that portion of the interview. If at any time you don’t have a preference you can choose neither.
