Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

My Thoughts:

Okay, so here's the deal I honestly can say that I have never given a book a chance more than I have this one. I tried reading the book a couple of years ago, got a few chapters in, and put it down. I just couldn't get into it. I kept the book around hoping to give it another try because someone had given me the second book and I thought it was the least I could do. I started to pick it up again a couple of times but just couldn't do it. A year goes by then I start hearing talking about a movie. Again, I think I should try to finish it before the movie comes out. Still, I didn't. Time goes by and more buzz goes around about the books and the movie. Again, I think I need to read this! Then, I see audible has it on sale for $4.95. Yes! My perfect chance to give it another try! Maybe the audiobook will make it easier to get through. Sadly, I still just wasn't as into it as I had hoped.

This is a loooonnnnggg audiobook. I mean really, gigantically long. Then again, what can you really expect from a 563 page book being read aloud? Still, I was hoping like with other audio books I had listen to that the time would fly by. That was not the case with Beautiful Creatures. There were parts that were good and interesting but unfortunately they were too far and few between. I felt like I had to keep forcing my way through the book.

The basis of the story was interesting. I've never been a huge fan of witch novels but still I don't think that was the issue for me. The issue was that there wasn't really any action and nothing was ever actually solved. The main characters ran around trying to find a way to make sure Lena didn't turn dark and in the end they didn't really figure out anything. Someone else had to explain everything to them and nothing that they had tried to do to stop everything that was happening helped at all. I just felt like so much of the book was wasted on Lena and Ethan searching for the answers when someone else already knew them but just didn't want to tell them.

As far as characters go, I wasn't wowed by Ethan or Lena. Neither were awful but there wasn't anything extraordinary about either of them either. I think Macon was my favorite character even though he infuriated me by not giving Ethan and Lena the answers they wanted and needed. I loved how calm and cool he stayed no matter the circumstances and despite his faults he did always have Lena's best interest at heart.

The narrator of this audio book was pretty good. Beautiful Creatures was the first audio book I listened to that was pretty much completely narrated by a guy. Overall, I thought he did a nice job.

In the end, I've decided that this series just isn't for me. While I would like to know how the series ends I just can't see myself slugging my way through 3 more 500 + page books.

  1. Ooh I so agree with you! The first chapters of Beautiful Creatures were IMPOSSIBLE for me and I could not finish reading the book, and so I DNFed it. But it doesn't sound like it gets better! The characters sounded so bland, and I'm glad I didn't get far enough to bet infuriated by Macon!

    Thanks for sharing!
