Top Ten Tuesday (43)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the  Broke and the Bookish!

Top Ten Books I Read in 2013

What a fitting topic for the last day of 2013!! So in 2013 I read a lot of great books, gained a new favorite author and might have read the best book I've ever read! Which books made my list for best books in 2013? Well, here they are...

1. Dangerous Girls by Abgail Haas- One of the most twisted books I've ever read. Definitely not what I was expecting.

2. The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead- I've been a huge Richelle Mead fan for quite a while but it wasn't until this book that I was a huge fan of the Bloodlines series!

3. Days of Blood and Starlight by Liani Taylor- To put simply, a beautiful, heartbreaking story.

4. Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare- A fantastic end to the series. Probably my favorite book by Clare.

5. Pivot Point by Kasie West- Remember how I said I found a new favorite author? Well, here she is. Kasie West is ah-mazing! Pivot Point was excellent!

6. The Distance Between Us by Kasie West- See why she's my new fave? A great contemporary that kept me up until the wee hours of the morning.

7. Split Second by Kasie West- Just finished this one a couple of days ago. Another great book! Not quite as good as the first but almost!

8. Shadow and Bone/Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo- These books are amazing! Not sure why it took me so long to read them!!

9. Endless Knight by Kresley Cole- These books are addicting! I seriously can't get enough Evie/Jack/Death!!

10. The Sea of Tranquility- This may in fact be my favorite book of all time and that's not something I say lightly! It's just one of those stories that sticks with you. It's written beautifully and I have a hard time believing that there's anyone that wouldn't love this book!

And there you have it!! What made your top ten? What books do I need to read in 2014?

Book Blast: Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic

Welcome to the Nerd Blast for
Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic
by Meghan Ciana Doidge

Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works.
Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

Review: The Fiery Heart

Title: The Fiery Heart
Author: Richelle Mead
Pages: 438
Format: Hardcover
Release Date: November 19, 2013
Publisher: Razorbill
Rating: 5 Cows

 Goodreads Description:

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her....

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure—and re-education—looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this thrilling fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

THE FIERY HEART is the only book I’ve really read recently. To say that I’ve been in a reading slump would be a drastic understatement. However, I did read and finish THE FIERY HEART and even better I loved it.

As a long time Richelle Mead fan and a MEGA Adrian fan, this shouldn’t be such a surprise but in a way it is. Despite the above-mentioned facts, I hadn’t loved any of the books in the Bloodlines series. Sure, I liked them but nothing more. I never could quite connect with Sydney the way I wanted to. I started to a little at the end of THE INDIGO SPELL, but it wasn’t until THE FIERY HEART that I really began to love her.

Finally, Sydney loosens up and lets go of all the crazy strict Alchemist rules and prejudices. The difference in Sydney is truly remarkable between BLOODLINES and THE FIERY HEART. She’s still smart and organized but she also allows herself to have fun and just live her life.

For the first time, Richelle Mead allows readers to see inside the mind of Adrian Ivashkov and it’s ah-mazing! Adrian was one of my first literary crushes and he definitely still claims a piece of my heart. I loved getting to see what was going on inside his head and also being able to see Sydney from his mind. I think that has a lot to do with why I really began to love Sydney. When you see her the way Adrian does you can’t help but love her.

Another great thing about THE FIERY HEART is that you get to see some great cameo appearances. Most notably, Rose Hathaway! J You’ll also see Dmitri, Lissa, Sonya, Christian, and Abe.

While THE FIERY HEART does have some action, the focus of this book is clearly Sydney and Adrian and how their relationship develops. Fans of Richelle Mead, will not be disappointed and will be anxious for the next installment.  In typical Richelle Mead fashion, my heart was completely ripped out and stomped on and I loved every second of it!

Goodreads Description:

The New York Times bestseller!

Sparkling white snowdrifts, beautiful presents wrapped in ribbons, and multicolored lights glittering in the night through the falling snow. A Christmas Eve snowstorm transforms one small town into a romantic haven, the kind you see only in movies. Well, kinda. After all, a cold and wet hike from a stranded train through the middle of nowhere would not normally end with a delicious kiss from a charming stranger. And no one would think that a trip to the Waffle House through four feet of snow would lead to love with an old friend. Or that the way back to true love begins with a painfully early morning shift at Starbucks. Thanks to three of today’s bestselling teen authors—John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle—the magic of the holidays shines on these hilarious and charming interconnected tales of love, romance, and breathtaking kisses.

Title: Being Sloane Jacobs
Author: Lauren Morrill
Publisher: Delacore
Release Date: January 7, 2014

Goodreads Description:

Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure-skater from Washington, D.C., who choked during junior nationals and isn’t sure she’s ready for a comeback. What she does know is that she’d give anything to escape the mass of misery that is her life.

Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player from Philly who’s been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. Her punishment? Hockey camp, now, when she’s playing the worst she’s ever played. If she messes up? Her life will be over.

When the two Sloanes meet by chance in Montreal and decide to trade places for the summer, each girl thinks she’s the lucky one: no strangers to judge or laugh at Sloane Emily, no scouts expecting Sloane Devon to be a hero. But it didn’t occur to Sloane E. that while avoiding sequins and axels she might meet a hockey hottie—and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It’s not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you’re someone else might be more difficult than being yourself.

Why I'm Waiting: Meant to Be was a cute book so I'm excited to read Morrill's next book. Plus, isn't the cover simply adorable??!!
