Audio Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Title: Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Author: Laini Taylor
Pages: 417
Release Date: September 27, 2011

Goodreads Description:

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

My Thoughts:

“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”

How can you not love a book that starts off with that line? Seriously, how much more intriguing can you get?

I got DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE as an audiobook to listen to while I was in the car. I drive A LOT with my job so I thought this would be a good way to pass the time on the job and also get a few more books read. Turns out this wasn’t just a good idea, it was a brilliant one. I’m not typically one to brag about myself but seriously this was one of the best ideas I’ve ever had.

Khristine Hvam does an excellent job at narrating. I loved her voice and the way she emphasized things. I felt that her narration really added something to the story. Also, I loved being able to hear how to pronounce names and other words in the book. After skimming through the book, I know that the names I would have come up with in my head wouldn’t have been nearly as beautiful as the actual ones.

The story itself was amazing. There was mystery. There was love. There was heartbreak. There was everything. This book really did have it all!

The world that Taylor creates in DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE is unmatched. Taylor creates a world full of monsters and angels, a world of creatures I could never dream of imagining and describes it in a way that I actually believed it could be real.

I loved Karou. I loved her blue hair. I loved her attitude and determination. I loved the fact that she could speak many languages and not all of them were human. Karou was fierce and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous of her. Yeah, I would totally love to be her.

It took me a little bit of time to warm up to Akiva. I struggled with Karou in figuring out if he was a good guy or a bad guy. Now, that I have finished the first book in the series I have to say that he’s a little of both. Then again, aren’t we all? In the end Akiva won be over, which made the end even more bittersweet. I won’t tell you what happens but rest assured that you will be thinking about the ending of this book days after you are finished with it.

The ending left me questioning what I would do/how I would feel if I were in Karou’s place. After several days of thinking about it, I still don’t know. It’s one of those situations where you can see both sides and can sympathize with each.

The only slow part to me was when the story goes back in time to tell a backstory. I was so anxious to find out what happened in the present I found myself not really caring what happened in the past. After finishing the book though I realized that it was a necessary part, I just really wanted to know what happened next!

In case you haven’t noticed I loved DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE! I loved this book so much I now own the audiobook, a paperback copy, I traded a new book I owned for an ARC of it and I’m thinking about buying a hardcover! Yes, I loved it THAT much and I’m sure you will too!

Cover Reveal: Release by M. R. Merrick

Release will be released on December 10, 2012.

After uniting the shifters and calling in reinforcements, Chase has to face his toughest challenge yet: learning to control his emotions. But as tensions rise and his powers grow, controlling his emotions becomes the least of his problems.

Terrorized by a multi-shifter who is hell-bent on turning him, Chase questions just how far he’s willing to go to stop his father.  Meanwhile, Tiki’s virtuous nature has placed him in the middle of Vincent’s past, leaving Chase to oppose a senate of vampires and defend a demon he hates.

Trying to balance his friends, his enemies, and his inner demons, Chase is left searching for answers about the Mark, his destiny, and where he can find the next soul piece. Stopping Riley is his top priority, but as more obstacles arise, he finds himself doubting all the decisions he’s made - especially regarding Rayna.
One thing is for certain: Chase has finally realized that he doesn’t know anything. The light doesn’t always quell the darkness, the monsters don’t always stay in the shadows, and the past doesn’t always stay in the past - sometimes, the demons inside are the hardest to fight.

My Thoughts:

I have liked all of the covers for this series. I love the colors and images used and I loved that all of the covers match. I hate when midway through a series the cover changes. I own the first two books but have yet to read them. I definitely plan to read them before Release releases. That's kind of a month full isn't it?

What are your thoughts on the cover? Are you excited about Release releasing? Tell me what you think in the comments!!

Review: These Things Hidden

Title: These Things Hidden
Author: Heather Gudenkauf
Pages: 337
Release Date: January 11, 2011

Goodreads Description:

When teenager Allison Glenn is sent to prison for a heinous crime, she leaves behind her reputation as Linden Falls' golden girl forever. Her parents deny the existence of their once-perfect child. Her former friends exult her downfall. Her sister, Brynn, faces whispered rumors every day in the hallways of their small Iowa high school. It's Brynn--shy, quiet Brynn--who carries the burden of what really happened that night. All she wants is to forget Allison and the past that haunts her. But then Allison is released to a halfway house, and is more determined than ever to speak with her estranged sister. Now their legacy of secrets is focused on one little boy. And if the truth is revealed, the consequences will be unimaginable for the adoptive mother who loves him, the girl who tried to protect him and the two sisters who hold the key to all that is hidden.

My Thoughts:

I have to say first that you have to be in the right frame of mind to read this book. Being a mother makes it hard to read a book about anything that has to do with babies or kids. I won't give away much more than that. It's gut wrenching and moving. This could be a Lifetime movie for crying out loud! I read it start to finish in only two days! Really, it was that good.

I like the way this book was written. I am a fan of having each character having their own point of view. Heather does that with this book. It is very well written and it takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride. I was hooked the second I opened this book.

You start off with Allison. She is the girl that I wanted to know more about. I wanted to know why she was in jail. I had to know what she did. But you are then lead to Brynn, who is Allison's sister. She just seemed odd to me. However, I felt sorry for her. After awhile I felt differently toward her and was annoyed with her. She wouldn't even talk to her sister. No matter how hard Allison tried Brynn just didn't care. You are introduced to Charm, a girl who is around the same age as Brynn. Charm takes care of her mom's ex-husband, Gus. He is the only man that Charm has ever seen as a father figure. Wow what a girl Charm is! I loved Charm as I did Allison. Claire is someone else you meet. She is a lady who owns a book store. I couldn't figure out how these four women all tied together except for the obvious which is Allison and her sister Brynn. So much happens I just cant get over how fast it goes.

I think I am still in shock after finishing this book. I went through so many emotions! I mean I actually cried! I felt anger and love. Allison's story shook me to the core! I felt so bad for her. After getting out of jail all I would want to do is see my mom and dad and they didn't even care to see her. I wanted to cry for her knowing that she was without her family. I am so attached to my family I don't think I could have dealt with not having them there. To be in the town where people think things of you, where your name was ran through the mud, I just don't think I could handle it! At some point I could understand and felt a little sorry for Brynn. I don't know that I could have dealt with going to school everyday if my sister had done what Allison did. I think I would have left too. Reading Brynn's chapters made me feel fidgety and uncomfortable sometimes. She sometimes made me sad but for the most part I felt like she was dark.

I did feel sorry for Claire. For the most of the book I felt she was just in the background but as you get more of her story you feel for her. Claire to me was one of those women that felt like warm summer air. She just felt warm and like home.  Claire was just trying to be a good mom to her son a wife and a friend to Charm.

Charm was going to school for nursing and taking care of her moms ex-husband who was dying from lung cancer. Gus was the only man that Charm ever knew as a dad. Her mother was a man eater, she chewed them up and spat them out. Charm lived with Gus and took good care of him. She knew it wasn't going to be long and he would be gone but she didn't want to think of him that way.

I enjoyed reading and feeling the way Allison grew in this book and by the time it was over I felt like a weight had been lifted from her, from all of the women. The way it comes together just has left me speechless.  I felt like more could come from this book. It feels a little like it has a cliffhanger. That is the only down fall from it.

Read this book! You won't be sorry! I give this one five out of five. You must get a hold of These Things Hidden! Get it, curl up on the sofa and dont stop!!

Review: Seduction and Snacks

Title: Seduction and Snacks
Author: Tara Sivec
Pages: 286
Release Date: June 11, 2012

Goodreads Description:

Claire is a twenty-something, single mom that grudgingly helps her best friend sell sex toys while she attempts to make enough money to start her own business to give her foul-mouthed, but extremely loveable (when he's asleep) toddler a better life.

When Carter, the one-night-stand from her past that changed her life forever, shows up in her hometown bar without any recollection of her besides her unique chocolate scent, Claire will make it a point that he remembers her this time.

With Carter's undisguised shock at suddenly finding out he has a four-year-old son and Claire's panic that her stretch marks and slim to none bedroom experience will send the man of her dreams heading for the hills, the pair will do whatever they can to get their happily ever after.

Warning: contains explicit sex, profanity and enough sarcasm to choke a horse.

My Thoughts:

Seduction and Snacks is not a book for the faint of heart. This book is sexy and funny. Be prepared for vulgar language and a leading man who is swoonworthy.  I have never laughed so hard in my life with in the first few pages!

Claire was above and beyond my favorite. She wasn't into all that sappy love crap. She is straight to the point and funny. She makes no excuses but tends to have word vomit. This book reminded me a lot of Sex In the City.  Liz is Claire's friend and she is somewhat of a sex crazed lady with standards. However, this is the girl who opens a sex toy store. I know, but you have to seriously give this book a try. I couldn't put it down! This book had me going all day. Claire and her friends have a sense of humor like no other. Her son, Gavin, reminds me of my three year old who runs around and says some of the strangest things.

Claire and her love for the one thing in the world that is not her son, her son's father, are brought back together and it was amazing! Carter sounds just like one of those sexy guys with blue grey eyes. But he has the heart of a girl for some parts of the book which annoyed me off and on. However, his pure hotness erases this.

I had a hard time following the writing style in a few chapters. Part of the time I couldn't figure out if I was reading as Carter or as Claire which made it a bit confusing at times!

I loved this book from start to finish, however, some of the conflicts in this book were silly. I do think that there could have been some better fights between Carter and Claire. I wanted to know more and I am hoping that there is more to come from this book.

Be prepared for sex, sex and some language. There is a four year old who cusses like a sailor from time to time and has the tendency to say the oddest things in his sleep.

I did want to leave you with a few of my favorite quotes.

Reader beware. These may just push you to buy this book!

"Give me a cat over a kid any day.  You can open up a bag of Meow Mix, plop it down on the floor next to a bucket of water, go on vacation for a week, and come home to an animal that is too busy licking it's own ass that it has no idea you were even gone."

"Liz, if you sneeze there's going to be a nip slip. Put those things away before you poke an eye out."

"Jesus Christ on a waffle cone, there's a reason why some animals in the wild eat their young."

"Bad boys , Bad boys, whatcha gonna do whatcha gonna do when they cut your wiener," Gavin sang as he pointed his gun at random objects. "Wow, cops have gotten pretty hardcore lately," Carter muttered.

I am telling you that you should grab this book. It does some some x rated parts but its worth every bit of it! You wont be disappointed! I give this one 5 out of 5. And it's only $2.99 for Kindle right now!

Top Ten Tuesday (19)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and the Bookish!

Top Ten Series I Haven't Finished

Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling- I have read the first 6 books but I still haven’t read the final book. I watched the movie so there wasn’t a “I have to know what happens” feeling anymore and I have a lot of books I need to read so I haven’t gotten around to it. I even opted to join a Harry Potter reading challenge, which I failed miserably. I still want to read it. I just haven’t found time!

Fallen by Lauren Kate I know the final book just came out but I still haven’t even read the second book. I bought it but I just haven’t wanted to read it. I guess that means I did really love the first book, right?

The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis- Okay, so technically I haven’t started this one but I really want too! I have read bits and pieces of different books. I still want to read the entire series start to finish.

The Immortals by Allyson Noel- I liked this series to start with and I think I have read the first three books but after that I just got burnt out. It seemed like it was the same story line again and again.

The Dark Divine series by Bree Despain- I have the last two books in the series sitting on my shelf but haven’t read them. I’m not sure exactly what happened with this one.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater- I read Shiver but wasn’t crazy about it and still have bought or read the other books in the series.

Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith (and whoever they have writing them now)- I read the first books in the series but I never did read any of the later books because everyone talked about how terrible they were. I did think about picking up one the other day though because it was a bargain book at Booksamillion but I didn’t. I do love the T.V. series though!

The Hourglass Door series by Lisa Mangum- I liked this book okay but there were so many other books that attracted my attention over the next books in this series.

And that’s all I could come up with!!

What’s on your top ten?

Review: The Last Princess

The Last Princess
Author: Galazy Craze
Pages: 295
Release Date: May 1, 2012

Goodreads Description:

A series of natural disasters has decimated the earth. Cut off from the rest of the world, England is a dark place. The sun rarely shines, food is scarce, and groups of criminals roam the woods, searching for prey. The people are growing restless. When a ruthless revolutionary sets out to overthrow the crown, he makes the royal family his first target. Blood is shed in Buckingham Palace, and only sixteen-year old Princess Eliza manages to escape. Determined to kill the man who destroyed her family, Eliza joins the enemy forces in disguise. She has nothing left to live for but revenge, until she meets someone who helps her remember how to hope-and love-once more. Now she must risk everything to ensure that she does not become... The Last Princess.

My Thoughts:

I read The Last Princess in literally one night. It’s one of those books that instantly has you hooked you and before you know it you’re done! It’s not an incredibly long book, only about 300 pages so that also played a factor. The Last Princess is fast paced from beginning to end and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Eliza is a strong female heroine. She did what she felt she needed to do without worrying about the consequences. Even though, Eliza was seeking revenge, you can’t dislike her for it because she is so clearly doing it for all the right reasons. She does want revenge for her family but she also wants to stop the resistance from completely taking over. She wants to save her people. She wants to make things right. How can you not love a character that’s trying to do that?

I liked Wesley. He was sweet and always helped Eliza when she needed him. More than once Wesley puts himself in danger to help her. I liked their relationship, however, I did have one issue with it. I felt that their relationship was rushed and that they liked each other without a reason. I guess one of the reasons Eliza fell for him was because he was always so kind to her and always helped her out. Other than that we don’t really get a reason for why she likes him. Wesley we have even less understanding for his instance attraction to her because we aren’t allowed to see in his head like we are Eliza.

Like I said earlier, The Last Princess was very fast paced and full of action. There is never a dull moment. I loved watching Eliza struggled to get her revenge and make things right. There was also a nice little twist at the end that I really liked and made the story even more interesting. Plus, it gave me more insight into some of the characters actions.

The Last Princess is supposed to be a series and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I think Galaxy Craze did an excellent job creating the first book in this series and I know it will only get better as the series continues.

Review: Foolish Games

Foolish Games
Foolish Games #1
Author: Leah Spiegel
Pages: 442

Goodreads Description:

Falling in love was the last thing Joie had on her mind when she was thrown into the marketing scandal intended to boost the Grimm Brothers Band's declining sales. Joie thought she knew the players of the game; she was the writer, J.T. Hawkins was the famous rock star, and Lizzie was her beautiful cover to the world. That was until a psychopathic stalker, who seemed to be three steps ahead of everyone else and calling all the shots, upped the stakes. In a situation where many different kinds of games were being played, Joie had to figure out if or who was bluffing because her life. . . and her heart, might very well depend on it.

My Thoughts:

When it came to Joie and J.T Hawkins being locked in the elevator you can feel the tension. It wasn't a big deal for her friend Lizzie who was all over another member of the band Warren. You would have thought that Joie was going to be sick just being in the same room as Hawkins. Joie, Lizzie and Riley are on a summer trip getting away from the usually things that you do right after you graduate high school. Joie with her dads old VW van and a envelope full of cash. Riley is a writer for the Grimm Brothers so they decided to follow the tour from venue to venue. That is why Joie is stuck in a elevator with Hawkins, she was breaking one of her rules.

Joie and Hawkins relationship is one of a love-hate. They bash each other from a blog or twitter. When that bashing puts Joie in the limelight she becomes a target for the Grimm reaper, a stalker who is trying all he can to ruin Joie's summer.  With Joie out on the road her mom wondering what she is doing, Joie told her she was following around a Political candidate.  However while writing about J.T Hawkins, Joie used her friend's photo as something of a slap to the face. However it sort of backfired. It gave Lizzie a slap in the face and made it seem like she was the one writing the blog.  Encounters with Hawkins, night after night, was wearing on Joie. She was falling for him and you could tell. However, she didn't know what she had.

With the Reaper running wild, Hawkins gives security detail and gives her his warning that she really should stay away from the band. That seems like an unlikely option for Joie and her friends. Lizzie is attached at the hip with Warren. Sleeping night to night in her fathers VW van and fighting the urges to break from her rules for Hawkins, Joie doesn't have time for a stalker who will soon be following her.

I have to tell you it took me a little bit of time to get into this book but it was amazing after I did get into it. I couldn't think of a better way to spend my night. Hawkins was a great dose of snarky and sexy. Joie was a girl who was down to earth and had her head on straight for the most part. The deceptions that come within the group is enough to yell out loud. I know my mouth dropped a few times at some of the things that happened. I don't know what girl wouldn't want to be sung to by a hot guy with a guitar then to be swept up off her feet.
I think for the price of the book you will love it. For the romance, the action and the little bit of mystery its got a little of everything you need.  I have to say I give it a 4 out of 5. I was so surprised at how well this book read for a .99 cent book. I loved it and I think you will too.

Update: Rick Riordan Alabama Tour Stop

Hey Y’all!

Update on the Rick Riordan signing in Alabama! I contacted the bookstore hosting him to get a little more info and I am definitely glad I did!

Here’s some info I think you definitely need to know before the event!

* Rick will only be pre-signing copies of Mark of Athena. This is due to the fact that he has a very busy schedule. He is moving from city to city very quickly so he doesn’t have a lot of time in each city. Also, they are expecting a large turnout because, well, Rick Riordan is coming to town! What this means is that you will have to purchase a copy from Page & Palette (you can pre-order it though) and that you will not be able to get any books from home signed. Yeah, I know I was bummed too but he’s a busy man!

* Also, due to time Rick will not have time to take individual photos. You can take photos of him but you won’t be able to take photos with him. (Maybe I can get a photo of me with him in the background? Hmm…might be wishful thinking!)

* Get there EARLY! Again, Rick Riordan is coming to town so you should expect a large crowd. Large crowd = seats filling up FAST! The bookstore recommends getting there at 12:00 (event is at 2:30).

* Be prepared to walk. Rick will be part of the Grand Festival of Arts so there will be a lot of people there that aren’t there to see him as well. I went to the festival last year and met Erin Morganstern and had to park several blocks away. So those hideous but oh so comfortable shoes, time to pull them out of the closet! Haha. Just kidding you won’t have to walk that far. Just don't wear 4 inch heels or anything!

* You can pre-order your signed copy so you don’t have to wait in a potentially incredibly long line! Oh, and the first 1,000 people get a free tshirt! Awesome, right?

I think I have hit all the high points! Page & Palette has updated their events page with a FAQ about the event that you can look at here.

If you have any other questions you can contact the bookstore. Doug was very nice to me and answered all my questions. If you don’t want to contact the bookstore you can ask me and I’ll contact him for you and let you know!

Hope to see you there!

Author: Steph Campbell & Liz Reinhardt
Pages: 170
Release Date: August 9, 2012

Goodreads Description:

Nineteen-year-old Whit Conrad leaves her conservative Pennsylvania home for sunny California, looking for independence, a fresh start, and a place to stash her grief. She promptly finds a job at a tattoo parlor, a craptastic first apartment, and one friend—Ryan—who is a little less friend, a little more benefits.

Deo Beckett is a soulful surfer with a passion for tattoos and beautiful women. On the eve of his twenty-second birthday, he finds himself living with his grandfather, recently unemployed, and seriously adrift. He doesn’t know much about what he wants out of life, but he does know his current situation isn't cutting it.

When Deo meets Whit, she’s all sexy makeup and fierce, smart-ass fun. It doesn’t take him long to see past her tough shell. And when he gets a good look at what's under all the superficial stuff that usually gets his attention, it leaves Deo wondering if there might be more to life than living fast and free.

Too bad Whit has a past she doesn't plan on sharing—no matter how hot Deo is. She might want him, but she knows better than to let her guard down.

Deo falls for Whit, and falls hard. But everything about her, down to that mysterious tattoo and the way she thrashes in her sleep, tells him that the girl he loves is hiding something. And the more he pushes for answers, the more Whit pulls away.

Having your guard up is one thing, but are the lengths Whit goes to to protect her secret worth throwing away the second chance she has at happiness with Deo?

LENGTHS is a Contemporary New Adult Romance to be released August 2012.

My Thoughts:

I have to say if you're looking for a book that has a little bit of this and a lot of love and lust, you got it with Lengths. I fell in love with Deo Beckett from the start. Deo is a surfer who you meet at his mom's house. She is an one of a kind hippie who loves to cook food fresh from her garden. I picture her walking around barefoot all day with long dresses and skirts. Deo's connection with Whit in the tattoo shop was instant. I knew that was it. I, however, didn't think Deo would turn semi stalkerish. He had it bad for her and Whit did too, she just did a better job of denying him the right to her heart.

I was upset with Whit for most of the book I thought, you dummy he is right there in bed with you. She had so many chances. Why not just chew him up and spit him out and get it over with? I was really mad because for the longest time you didn't know what happened to her brother. I thought maybe the way they were going with it that he was in a crash and Whit made it out but he didn't. That's not the case though. I was touched when I found out. I could understand why Whit would protect herself a little but relationship wise I guess I didn't get it. I mean I would have thought she left a great guy behind at home who cheated on her back in Pennsylvania or something like that.

Whit and Deo's first date left you wanting more; begging for it. The second that they had a connection you felt it. I loved the way Deo would do just about anything to be around her even if it meant just sleeping and doing nothing else. Whit is a girl who needs a laid back guy like Deo. She is too much by the book. She thinks everything should go one way and that way only. Deo is so laid back and just lets time slip. No job, no worries, just surf and thats all.

That changes, Whit cant take him being lazy she wants him to want more. She tries to set him up but it fails and blows up in his and her face.

Deo's mom is the type of mom we all needed to have for mother in laws. When Whit is down and out about Deo she goes to his mom for comfort and some of her home made remedies. There for a while you find yourself mad at Whit then mad at Deo. Who is right? Who is wrong? Yes, he is sweet but it was out of bounds. It pushes you to question what would you do in her situation. I know I wouldn't have treated Deo the way she does sometimes.

Deo is a great guy and Whit needs him. They deserve each other. This book gives you all you need from start to finish! There is love, lust, sex and a ending that leaves you wondering will there be another! I was happy with the way it ended but there could be another book.  I have to give this book a 4 out of 5 because it was something I enjoyed and would reccommend to my friends.

Kindle users can pick it up for about $3.99 right now. I say pick it up, give it a read, and enjoy the frustration and satisfaction that comes with this book. Dont fall to hard for Deo!
