Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight

Title: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
Author: Jennifer E. Smith
Pages: 236
Release Date: January 2, 2012

Goodreads Description:

Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?

Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan's life. Having missed her flight, she's stuck at JFK airport and late to her father's second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon-to-be stepmother Hadley's never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport's cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he's British, and he's sitting in her row.

A long night on the plane passes in the blink of an eye, and Hadley and Oliver lose track of each other in the airport chaos upon arrival. Can fate intervene to bring them together once more?

Quirks of timing play out in this romantic and cinematic novel about family connections, second chances, and first loves. Set over a twenty-four-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver's story will make you believe that true love finds you when you're least expecting it.

My Thoughts:

I thought the Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight was a fun, quick read. I loved the idea of the book. Falling in love in an airport in less than 24 hours…add in a cute British guy and you’ve got me hooked.

I thought the characters were very interesting. Hadley and Oliver both have their own set of personal problems. Oliver somehow manages to get Hadley to tell him all about hers but we never really see what’s going on with Oliver until later in the book. I honestly can’t blame Hadley for resenting her father for leaving her mom and her for another woman. Seriously, who wouldn’t be mad about that?

I loved Oliver. He was so sweet, caring and understanding. Not just anyone would be able to get Hadley to open up so quickly to them. Also, I must admit the whole British then definitely pulled me in. What American girl does have a special place in their heart for a cute, quirky guy with a British accent?

The story line in The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight was so-so. I loved the parts with Hadley and Oliver but I felt like the story focused too much on Hadley’s family issues. I understand the need to explain what’s going on with her but I just thought that it was supposed to be more of a love story (based on the title) and at the end of it I didn’t feel like it lived up to the title. Was there a love story? Yes. What the love story the focus of the book? Not really. My complaint is that if you are going to have two characters fall in love in 24 hours. That should be it. We shouldn’t have so much “extra drama”.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. The characters were interesting and the story was quick and easy to read. I literally read it in a few hours. Let’s face it though, the book had me with the premise of falling in love in an airport. If only….
