Jason Bourne meets The Sopranos in this breathtaking adventure
Sara Jane Rispoli is a normal sixteen-year-old coping with school and a budding romance--until her parents and brother are kidnapped and she discovers her family is deeply embedded in the Chicago Outfit (aka the mob).
Now on the run from a masked assassin, rogue cops and her turncoat uncle, Sara Jane is chased and attacked at every turn, fighting back with cold fury as she searches for her family. It's a quest that takes her through concealed doors and forgotten speakeasies--a city hiding in plain sight. Though armed with a .45 and 96K in cash, an old tattered notebook might be her best defense--hidden in its pages the secret to "ultimate power." It's why she's being pursued, why her family was taken, and could be the key to saving all of their lives.
Action packed, with fresh, cinematic writing, Cold Fury is a riveting and imaginative adventure readers will devour.
When I first read the description for COLD FURY I was intrigued. It was not like any of the books that I typically find myself reading but a YA novel set in Chicago dealing with the Mob? Hello, who wouldn’t want to read that?
To be honest, the book starts off kind of slow. The author gives a lot of background information and makes several time jumps. In the beginning, it feels like the author is telling us what happens, instead of, showing us what happens. Eventually though, the story picks up and I finally starting feeling like I was being shown the events rather than told.
The story is set in Chicago, which I loved! I recently took a trip to Chicago so I loved knowing all of the street names and places that Sara Jane went. Chicago is such an amazing city with so much history (and Mafia history) that it was the absolute perfect setting for COLD FURY.
Once the story picked up, I found myself really enjoying COLD FURY. Sara Jane is a strong female heroine, which is one of the main qualities I look for in a book. She doesn’t cower away from danger. Instead, she seeks out the people who took her family and sets out to find the answers to who she is and what exactly her family is mixed up in. Turns out, everything she believed about her nice, private family was only half the truth. The other half is dangerous and could get everyone she cares about killed.
There wasn’t much emphasis on the love story component in this book but the little bit that was there I loved. Max is cute and sweet and I loved how they had previously met. Despite the lack of a detailed love story, I do foresee a potential love triangle with the addition of Tyler. As much as I loved Max, I got to say Tyler definitely had me intrigued. I can’t wait to see more of him and believe me we have not seen the last of him!
I thought Doug was adorable. His ability to ignore Billy the Bully and fight violence with non-violence was beyond admirable. If I were in his shoes I know I couldn’t have put up with everything he did. I enjoyed seeing how his character developed in the book.
My favorite part of this book was the world building. The idea that the Mafia is not only, alive and well, but actually, flourishing is incredibly interesting and original, especially for a YA novel. Yes, the author throws a lot of information at you but it’s all necessary. The Chicago Outfit is a very intricate organization that requires a lot of details. Even with all of the information Goeglein reveals in COLD FURY there is still a lot to be learned. Who exactly has Sara Jane’s family and what are they planning to use them for? Is Tyler’s interest in Sara Jane genuine? Will Sara Jane be able to unravel all the mysteries and save her family?
I am truly fascinated with the world Goeglein has created and I cannot wait to learn more! When is book two coming out??
