Why We Broke Up-Review

Why We Broke Up

Goodreads Description
I'm telling you why we broke up, Ed. I'm writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened.

Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.

My Thoughts
WARNING: While I don’t say exactly what happened, some of my statements may make it so you can figure out what happened. I do have it noted where the slight spoilers start and end if you would like to read the rest of the review.  Thanks!
My first thought when I picked up this book was, “Man, this book is HEAVY!” My second thought, (after reading the book description and taking a peek inside), was “Man, this sounds like an interesting concept for a book. I was especially intrigued on how the book was written, plus there were pictures!
Why We Broke Up is printed on thick paper and has cute illustrations to go along with the story. It is written in the form of a letter (a very long letter) from Min to her now ex boyfriend Ed. In it, Min tells the story of how they met and got together and ultimately why they broke up. The ending itself is no mystery. You  watch them get together and fall in love but in the back of your mind you keep thinking (hoping) maybe they will make it, maybe the title is just there to throw you off, maybe, maybe, maybe… You know it’s pointless, but still you hope or at least I was.
I loved this book! I fell in love with Ed and Min’s relationship and the whole time I kept telling myself that maybe things would work out. They fell so hard for each other; I knew that it had to be true love. The fact that they were so different but both comprised made me love them both even more.
I love the letter format for the book. However, there were times with it got on my nerves and made it difficult to understand. For example, during dialogue there would be a lot of “you said”, “I said”, “she said”. It got a bit repetitive and also a bit confusing. Overall though, I enjoyed Min’s narration of the story. She was funny and very to the point.
I will admit that Ed kind of stole my heart in this book. The things he’s willing to do for Min even though, they are things that are completely foreign to him made me love him. I couldn’t help it. The whole time I’m just wondering what could he have done to make Min break up with him?
All of that being said, this book broke my heart. Ed broke my heart. I couldn’t believe what happened in the end. But being honest, reading the book from Min’s perspective allowed me to really see the situation and experience the situation the exact way that she did and I think that’s why I was blindsided. All of the warning were there but, I, like Min, just overlooked them because we were both so in love with Ed. We didn’t think that it was possible for him to betray us and when I say “we” and“us” I mean Min and I because I felt betrayed and I didn’t believe Ed was capable of that.  In my mind though, that just makes the story that much more believable. The story and characters are real. And as they say love is blind.
As I said earlier, I loved this book, but as I also said earlier, this book broke my heart. I hated the ending and above all I hated Ed. However, the older you get the more you realize that life is full of heartbreak and disappointment, and the people you thought you could count on and trust will let you down. So if you want to read a real story, about real heartbreak, while getting a few laughs along the way, read this book. You will not be disappointed.
