Jessica Rules the Dark Side-Review

Jessica Rules the Dark Side (Jessica, #2)

Goodreads Description

It’s one thing to find out you’re a vampire princess. It’s a whole other thing to actually rule. Newly married Jessica Packwood is having a hard enough time feeling regal with her husband, Lucius, at her side. But when evidence in the murder of a powerful elder points to Lucius, sending him into solitary confinement, Jessica is suddenly on her own. Determined to clear her husband’s name, Jessica launches into a full-scale investigation, but hallucinations and nightmares of betrayal keep getting in her way. Jessica knows that with no blood to drink, Lucius’s time is running out. Can she figure out who the real killer is—and whom she can trust—before it’s too late?

My Thoughts

I read Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side a while back and loved it, so when I found out there was a sequel I was thrilled. In the sequel, Jessica and Lucius are married and living in Romania. This proves to be a difficult transition for Jessica and understandably so. She misses her friends and family and the comforts of her life in the United States.

At the beginning of this book, I felt Jessica was a much weaker character than the one we had come to love in the previous book. However, I understand why this is. Her life has changed drastically and she’s still not sure where she fits in. I think that portraying Jessica as weaker makes her a more believable character. But don’t worry guys, Jessica gets her stuff together by the end and I can’t tell you how great it was to watch it unfold.
I really loved Mindy in this book. The book alternates between Mindy and Jessica’s points of view and also shows written correspondence between Lucius and Raniero. I thought that this was a very good choice. Mindy is a fun character and it’s nice to see what going on in her head. I also thought that the written correspondence was a good way to show what Lucius was thinking because we didn’t get to see as much of him in this book.
Raniero was a very interesting addition to the cast of characters. I have to admit that I fell a little bit in love with him. There were literally two sides to him and I think I loved them both. I definitely think there’s more to tell with his and Mindy’s story.
There were a couple of things about this book that I didn’t love. First, Jessica goes by the name Antanasia, except for when she’s talking to Mindy or Lucius in private. I get the reasoning behind it I just didn’t care for it. Also, it’s fairly easy to figure out who the “bad guy(s)” are in this book. There were just too many clues to not be able to figure it out.
Overall, Jessica Rules the Dark Side is an entertaining read. If you like Jessica’s Guide you should definitely pick up this sequel.
