Hereafter (Hereafter, #1)

Goodreads Description

Can there truly be love after death?

Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive.
Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their newfound happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever.
My Thoughts

I really, really, really wanted to like this book because I loved the cover and I loved the idea of the book. I mean the cover is absolutely beautiful and I’ve always been into books about life after death. I enjoy seeing other people’s beliefs on what happens when we die. However, I didn’t care for this book.
The characters were probably my biggest problem. We know very little about any of them. Amelia doesn’t know much about herself (although slowly throughout the book a little of her story is revealed), we are given very few “real” details about Josh or Joshua, whichever you would like to call him (personally I preferred Josh), and Eli is so mysterious and elusive it’s hard to gain any opinion on him at all. The lack of details about the characters caused a lack of connection for me and at the end of the book I didn’t really care what happened to them.
The storyline was okay. There were lots of things that I thought were strange and didn’t make sense to the story. I think there were several plot points that could have changed to make the story a lot better. I did read it rather quickly but I think that was because I was hoping that the story would get better, that something would come along to tie everything together for me. It just didn’t happen.
Even though, I loved the cover I ended up buying the kindle version while it was on sale for .99.  I’m glad I didn’t buy the actual book but it did hold my attention enough to make me feel like I didn’t waste the .99 I spent on it.
This book just wasn’t for me. There have been many people that loved it…I just wasn’t one of them.
Grade: D+
