My Week in a Nutshell

My Week in a Nutshell is a weekly post I do on Friday or Saturday (depending on how busy I am) where I discuss what I’ve read this week and any other book related thoughts I have.

What I’ve Read this Week
I’m STILL reading on Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.  I am also reading Lament by Maggie Stiefvater. Earlier this week I finished Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side and Entice.
This week I’ve been doing something I don’t typically do. I’m reading two books at once. It’s not something I like doing, just because I like being able to completely absorb myself in a novel and reading two at once makes that more difficult. However, I made an exception to my own rule for two reasons. 1) Since I’m blogging and writing reviews now, I need to read books to review. I don’t see the point in reviewing Harry Potter since most of the world has already read it numerous times. 2) I read during my lunch break at work and Harry Potter is a heavy book to carry around so I’ve been leaving it at work and reading Lament at home on my Kindle.

Thoughts this Week
This week I’ve been thinking a lot about going back to school to get my Master’s in English-Creative Writing. I just have this feeling that I’m not doing what I’m supposed to be doing. Reading and writing are my passions. That’s what I should be doing (or something that incorporates those two things). So I have pretty much decided that in January I am going to go back (assuming that I get accepted).
We spend 40 hours a week at work, 40 HOURS . That’s a lot of time to spend doing something you don’t love.  It’s so important to figure out what your passions are and find a job that incorporates them.
I’ve also thought a lot about what I’m going to do with a degree in Creative Writing and I’m still not 100% sure what I’ll do. My dream job, of course, is to be a writer but it’s good to have a back-up plan. I think I would enjoy teaching college or high school English or working in a library. There’s a lot of young people out there that don’t read because the books they are being forced to read aren’t what they are interested in. My belief is that it’s not as much the subject matter that’s important as much as it is the fact that they’re reading, learning, and enjoying it.

And that’s my week in a nut shell. Let me know what you think in the comments!
